As a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), Dr. Akhtar has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the field of cardiology. The services typically offered by a cardiologist like Dr. Akhtar would likely include a comprehensive range of care related to the heart and vascular system. These services often encompass:

  • Cardiac Consultations: Thorough evaluations of patients experiencing heart-related symptoms or those with known cardiovascular conditions. This involves reviewing medical history, conducting physical examinations, and discussing concerns.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Cardiologists utilize various tests to diagnose and monitor heart conditions. These may include electrocardiograms (ECG/EKG) to measure electrical activity of the heart, echocardiograms (ultrasounds of the heart) to assess its structure and function, stress tests to evaluate heart performance under exertion, Holter monitors and event recorders to track heart rhythm over extended periods, and potentially other specialized tests as needed.
  • Management of Cardiovascular Diseases: This includes the treatment and ongoing care for conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), coronary artery disease (angina, heart attacks), heart failure, arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats like atrial fibrillation or flutters), valvular heart disease, and hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). Treatment plans may involve medication management, lifestyle modifications, and coordination with other specialists for interventional procedures or surgeries when necessary.
  • Preventive Cardiology: Identifying and managing risk factors for heart disease, such as smoking, diabetes, obesity, and family history, to prevent the development or progression of cardiovascular issues. This includes patient education and guidance on healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Follow-up Care: Regular monitoring of patients with existing heart conditions to assess the effectiveness of treatment, make necessary adjustments, and ensure long-term cardiovascular health.

The features of Dr. Akhtar's practice can be gleaned, in part, from the available patient reviews. One patient with 30 years of experience in the Smithfield, NC area describes Dr. Akhtar as "one of the most compassionate and down to earth Doctors" they have met. This long-term patient of over 10 years expresses consistent trust in Dr. Akhtar, stating they always visit his office when concerned about their heart. They highlight his attentiveness ("He listens to me") and his thorough approach to diagnosis ("does all the testing to rule out any problem"). This testimonial suggests a patient-centered approach, characterized by empathy and a commitment to thorough investigation.

However, another patient review presents a contrasting experience. This individual sought care for a "racing heart" but felt "dismissed" and was prescribed medication that reportedly worsened their low blood pressure, leading to dizziness and sickness. This patient reported receiving more informative details about their condition (atrial flutters) from paramedics during an ambulance ride to the emergency room and subsequently recommends seeking care at Duke University. This review raises concerns about the thoroughness of the initial assessment and the appropriateness of the prescribed treatment in this specific case.

It is important to consider both of these perspectives when evaluating Dr. Akhtar's practice. The positive review emphasizes compassion, attentiveness, and thoroughness over a long-term patient relationship. The negative review highlights a specific instance where a patient felt their concerns were not adequately addressed, and the treatment had adverse effects. These contrasting experiences underscore the subjective nature of patient satisfaction and the importance of individual experiences.

Currently, no specific promotional information or special offers for Dr. Mateen Akhtar's services are available in the provided data. In conclusion, Mateen Akhtar, MD, FACC, is a cardiologist serving the Smithfield, NC community. I have have met many Doctors in the 30 years I have lived in Smithfield, NC. Doctor Matten had been one of the most compassionate and down to earth Doctors, I have met. He has been treating me for more than 10 years and I always go to his office everytime I am concerned about my heart. He listens to me and does all the testing to rule out any problem.

I went to see him about my racing heart. He dismissed me and gave me some pills like that would fix everything, the only thing that did was bring my low blood pressure down even more making my dizzy and sick. I went to the ER by ambulance and the paramedics gave me more information about my condition than him. I have atrial flutters. Go to Duke University to get proper care.
