Practicing at Froedtert Hospital, a renowned medical center, Dr. Pearson brings a strong academic background combined with significant surgical skills in addressing complex heart conditions requiring surgical intervention. His dual credentials as a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy underscore his commitment to both clinical excellence and a deep understanding of cardiovascular disease.

When facing the need for cardiac surgery, finding a surgeon who is not only technically proficient but also communicates effectively and involves patients in the decision-making process is paramount. The provided patient reviews for Dr. Pearson highlight these crucial aspects of his practice. One patient, who underwent mitral valve replacement, commended Dr. Pearson's sizing and surgical skills as "perfect." This positive outcome speaks to his precision and expertise in valve surgery. Another patient, who required a new aortic heart valve and two bypasses, praised Dr. Pearson for thoroughly explaining the pros and cons of different valve options (pig versus mechanical) and allowing the patient to make an informed choice. This demonstrates a patient-centered approach where shared decision-making is valued. The same patient also noted Dr. Pearson's detailed explanations of the procedures and the considerable time he spent with their family post-surgery, emphasizing his compassionate care and communication skills. This reviewer concluded that Dr. Pearson is a "highly skilled and knowledgeable surgeon" and potentially "one if not the best Cardiothoracic Surgeons in Wisconsin and the country."

As a cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Paul Joseph Pearson, MD, PhD, specializes in surgical procedures involving the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. His services likely include:

  • Heart Valve Surgery: Performing repairs or replacements of heart valves, including aortic, mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves. The patient reviews specifically mention mitral and aortic valve replacement, indicating expertise in this area. Dr. Pearson also takes the time to discuss different valve options with patients.
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): Surgically bypassing blocked coronary arteries to restore blood flow to the heart muscle. The need for two bypasses in one of the reviews confirms his experience with this critical procedure for coronary artery disease.
  • Aortic Surgery: Performing surgical procedures on the aorta, the body's largest artery, which may include repair of aneurysms or dissections in the chest.
  • Surgical Treatment of Heart Failure: Offering surgical options for patients with advanced heart failure, such as ventricular assist devices (VADs) or heart transplantation (depending on the hospital's program and Dr. Pearson's specific expertise within the team).
  • Surgery for Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB): While one review mentions a different electrophysiologist correcting AFIB non-invasively after Dr. Pearson's valve replacement, cardiothoracic surgeons sometimes perform surgical ablation procedures for AFIB during other cardiac surgeries. Dr. Pearson's comprehensive approach might include addressing AFIB when it is concomitant with other surgical needs.
  • Pericardial Surgery: Addressing conditions affecting the sac surrounding the heart (pericardium).
  • Lung Surgery (Thoracic Surgery): As a cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Pearson may also perform certain thoracic surgeries, although his primary focus seems to be on cardiac procedures based on the provided reviews.

I needed a new aortic heart valve and 2 bypasses. Dr. Pearson gave me the pros and cons of a pig valve versus mechanical valve and let me choose which option I wanted. He was very detailed in explaining what procedures would be done. My open heart surgery lasted 7 hours and afterwards spent a considerable amount of time with my family. Dr. Pearson is a highly skilled and knowledgeable surgeon, who is one if not the best Cardiothoracic Surgeons in Wisconsin and the country.

Dr. Pearson just completed an open heart surgery on my father and I could not be more pleased with how it went. He was very professional and was so kind to come and talk to us after the surgery to let us know that everything went well. I would highly recommend him.
